If you are a hockey mom, you will know that typically, unless you know the moms from the other team personally before you get to the rink, you are not likely to strike up a conversation with the opposition’s mothers when you are at the arena. Though I really did make an effort last year, especially during the playoffs, it seems to be just one part of our hockey culture to stand apart and separate, both in the lobby, and in the stands, from the other team’s moms.
All of the invisible barriers that keep hockey moms apart were removed yesterday with the VIP luncheon for Hockey Moms hosted by COLD-FX. From the moment that the moms began to assemble at the registration table where they picked up their t-shirts, to the introduction of special guest Don Cherry, to the final pictures where all the hockey moms surrounded Don, there were only smiles on the faces of the moms, and on their hockey playing children. Moms from different teams and organizations chatted together at tables, and in the hall, like they had known each other for years. And why not? There was no competition today! We hockey moms were being recognized for our hard work, dedication, and commitment to getting our children up in the morning, fed, dressed in hockey garb, and to the arena several times a week, often at ridiculous times. We were recognized with a special lunch, with some kind words, and by Don Cherry himself, who considers hockey moms, “the greatest people in the world”.
Somehow I lucked out and ended up at the head table, which was a real thrill for me. From my vantage point I could look out to see the 100 hockey moms in attendance, and their hockey children, smiling, laughing, and just celebrating what we do. What a great boost to motivate all of us at the beginning of a long season!

For those of you not in attendance, please remember that this luncheon was in honour of you as well! As Don said, there would be no Canadian hockey, and no Canadian Gold medals, without the likes of you! And to Don Cherry and COLD-FX, thank you for hosting such a memorable day, and for bringing hockey moms to the forefront, if even just for moment. And if you ever decide to do this again in another part of the country, I just happen to know a place where you can find over 3,000 Hockey Moms in Canada who would love to join you!
